Message From Administration

Du bureau de M Fehr/Desde el escritorio del Sr. Fehr

Buenas tardes/Bonjour:

Further to my message from last week I just wanted to share with Westgate families the response I received from the principal of Catherine Nichols Gunn School:

Dear Mr. Fehr:

It has been another successful year for the Christmas Store at Catherine Nichols Gunn School. This is in large part due to the donations  your school community generously provided. Hundreds of students have had the opportunity to experience the “gift of giving” as they purchased items (at significantly low prices) for their parents/guardians, siblings and other family members. The joy you have helped provide will last a life time and warm the hearts of many this Christmas season. Thank you so much for your involvement and support.

We wish you all a fun and joyous season,

Students and Staff of
Catherine Nichols Gunn School

For those of you who are long time Gators the principal of Catherine Nichols Gunn is Steve Wigglesworth who used to be Assistant Pricncipal at Westgate.

Have a good evening everyone and stay warm!

Message From Administration

Du bureau de M Fehr/Desde el escritorio del Sr. Fehr

Buenas tardes/Bonjour:

I would like to thank our Westgate families for so generously donating items to the Catherine Nichols Gunn Christmas Store.  Many families have also offered gift cards as a gift of dignity to our Westgate families in need of support this holiday season.  Again I would like to sincerely thank you for your kindness. These are the gestures that make our school community such a wonderful place to learn and work.

Last night our annual holiday Choir and Guitar Concert took place in the Westgate gym. The students played extremely well.  Ms. O'Laughlin, Mr. Gowan and Mr. Chapman did an outstanding job preparing the students for the concert.  Thank you to students, parents, instructors and teachers for your hard work preparing for this evening.

Mabel's Labels

Each month at Westgate, several unlabeled items are brought to the lost and found. You can help us reduce the number of items in the school's Lost and Found, and earn money for Westgate! Westgate School Council has launched a fundraising program with Mabel's Labels, a company that provides durable personalized stickers at an affordable price.

Some items such as the peel and stick labels are dishwasher and washer safe, so you can use them on water bottles, sweaters, gloves, and hats! As an added benefit, Westgate School keeps 20% of all orders. Please help us by using these great labels on ALL the items you send to school with your kids.

To place an order, go to the Westgate School website and click on the Mabel’s Labels button on the home page. If you require assistance placing an order please call 1-866-306-2235 (option 3) or email fundraising@mabelslabels.com.

Thank you for supporting our fundraiser and helping to reduce the number of unidentified items in the Lost and Found.

Terry Fox Fun

For the past three weeks during PE, students have been practicing and preparing for the Terry Fox Run.

Every year, we complete the journey from St. John’s Newfoundland to Victoria, B.C. Students run laps outside around the field, for each lap they complete they receive a popsicle stick which represents 1 km.

On Thursday, September 29th  from 1:45 - 2:20 pm,  all Westgate students and staff will be running the Terry Fox Run outside on the field. Please dress your children for the weather, we will run rain or shine. Parents are welcome to join us in completing our run.

If you wish to make a donation, students are welcome to bring a “Toonie for Terry” in support of the Marathon of Hope. All funds raised will go to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Alberta Health Services Health Education and Learning Website

Alberta Health Services has unveiled its Health Education and Learning (HEAL) website designed to assist parents with the management of pediatric illnesses and provide direction on whether an emergency room visit is required.

HEAL aims to supply information and reduce the number of unnecessary E.R. visits while being mindful to the concerns of parents.

HEAL is a reliable tool for parents amidst a sea of secondhand anecdotes and internet diagnoses.

HEAL provides information on common ailments including:

Welcome Back Picnic - Save the Date!

Westgate School will be holding a Welcome Back Picnic on Friday, September 9th from 11:40 am until 12:28 pm. Any family members who are able to come are invited to bring a blanket and their lunch to school and we will all have a picnic outside (or in classrooms if it is rainy). It will provide a chance for parents to meet their child’s new teacher, some of their classmates and their parents. We understand this is during the day and that not everyone will be able to make it, but we hope you will come if you can.

Information about bell times and the Westgate school calendar has been posted on our school website at www.cbe.ab.ca/b140We anticipate that bus routes will be posted by the end of July.

Play Day

Play Day (also known as Sports Day) is almost here! On Friday, June 24th from 8:15 - 11:15 am all Westgate students will be participating in “Right to Play” activities to help raise awareness about equality issues. This organization is working hard to fight inequality and does so through play. As part of the grade 4/5’s project, they have created activities and games to foster equality at our school. They have encouraged and motivated students to play fair and treat each other as equals. Now they will do what kids do best, PLAY! Penny Carnival

Wow can you believe it has been almost a month since the 2016 Westgate Penny Carnival!

Thank you so much for coming out with your families - it was a record breaking year.

I say it often - but the Carnival is really one of my favourite days of the year! I absolutely love walking around and seeing smiling faces, teachers getting soaked, obstacle races, cakes being won, and so many Westgate families having fun together!

Over 2000 people attended this year's very successful Carnival. The fun was also a fundraiser - and thanks to your generous support we raised  over $13,400! In addition, we raised over $1,200 for the Fort McMurray fundraiser.

A huge thank you to the organizing committee who spent many fun days and many long hours making sure the Carnival was a success! This dedicated committee consisted of:  Michelle Dirk, Susannah Thomsen, Deb Rath, Rosario Stevens and Carol-Ann Titus.

Many more wonderful volunteers helped gather donations, shopped, numbered tickets, sorted prizes, spent afternoons helping with count days and baked cakes. Plus hundreds more helped run stations, cleaned up, sold tickets and made cotton candy the night of the Carnival - thank you all!

A special great big thanks to the very patient, always helpful and caring office staff Donita and Dana, and to John and Jose, the amazing custodians who are always willing to lend a hand with a smile!  To Scott and Adriana and the fabulous and supportive teaching staff - thank you for your participation and excitement around the Carnival!

Our vendors who all helped out by giving special discounts and providing great service include: Tubbies, Leap Studios, Majestic Tents, Ernie's Mobile BBQ, Sign-a-Rama and Open-a-Party Party Supplies,

All raffle prizes were donated by the following businesses in our area:

Colour on Fire Art Studio, Dry Cleaning by Dave, Indigo, Mastermind Toys, City of Calgary, Gaucho Brazilian BBQ, Montana's, Cineplex, Marble Slab Aspen, Westside Recreation Centre,722,  Toys-R-Us, Purple Saurus, Julie Marwood Photography, Co-op, Safeway, Calgary Flames, Marwood Group Inc., Michael's, Calgary Corn Maze, Calaway Park, Butterfield Acres, Flying Squirrel, Calgary Cycle, Ca Va Bien Day Spa, Superstore, Sobey's, Play Play Play, Tommy K Play, Karma Hot Yoga, Union Fitness, Best Buy, Stride Fitness, plus anonymous donors of individual prizes.

I would love to hear from you if you would like to help make the event even better by sharing suggestions or offering your time  to help the committee next year!

Mark your calendars for May 26, 2017! Plans are already in the works to make next year the best Carnival ever - it will be amazing - can't wait to see you then!

Next Year Planning

Taking into consideration input from teachers and School Council we have been busy planning the organization of the school for next year.  Using projection numbers for September 2016 our school organization for the 2016-17 school year will look like this:

French Immersion
Spanish Bilingual
Grade 1 4 classes
Grade 2 4 classes 3 classes
Grade 3 4 classes 3 classes
Grade 4 3 classes 3 classes
Grade 5 2 classes 2 classes
Grade 6 2 classes

It is important to note that this organization is based on our projected enrolment.  We will adjust as required depending on actual enrolment in September. As we have been working through this process, our focus has been on keeping our pupil-teacher ratio as small as possible.

A second issue that we look at is our use of space in the building.  Our priorities are:
  • different kinds of spaces for each grade/language configuration
  • windows for at least one class in each grade/language configuration
  • classrooms of the same grade/language configuration are in close proximity

Our teaching teams will be looking at how they can use their classrooms and space to meet the learning needs of all of the children in their grade/program configuration.

If you have questions regarding school organization or any of the other issues mentioned above please call or email.

Bike to School Day

Bike to School Day was a huge success!

What a beautiful day for a bike ride!  A huge thank you to all of the students and parents who rode to school today, either as part of one of the organized group rides or on their own.  We had approximately 240 riders overall at Westgate (up from 215 last year), including 130 Westgate students who were registered (up from 101 last year) as well as siblings, some of whom attend kindergarten at Rosscarrock.  It was great to see the school grounds crawling with bikes again and many happy, smiling (and slightly sweaty) faces.  The kids were thrilled to see some of their teachers on the ride and also generously helping with bike tagging and parking.

A special thank you to the team of parent volunteers -- Alison, Carolyn, Diane, Erik, Jeannette, Ketty, Magdalena, Marisa, Paul, Shauna and Sheri -- who helped this morning coordinating the groups at the various "stops" for bike-to-school day.  Thanks for keeping us on time, on route and safe!  Thank you also to parent volunteers Susan and Betty who helped with "site support" handing out bike tags and buttons. Finally, many thanks to Isabel for designing the logo for the buttons.

Thank you also to Srta. Usoa, Srta. Tamara and Mr. Fehr for your support in planning the event and most of all for biking with us today.  Nothing makes a kid's head turn more than seeing a teacher or principal "in the wild!"

See you next year on the first Tuesday in June for Bike to School Day 2017.

¡Buen trabajo a todos! Merci beaucoup!

Register for Westgate Bike to School Day on June 7th

Next Tuesday, June 7th is "Calgary Bike to School Day" and many Westgate School families and teachers are planning to participate again this year. This extracurricular event is geared at celebrating the joys of biking, encouraging kids and parents to be active together and demonstrating that "pedal power" is a feasible and fun way to get to school. Last year, nearly 8000 students and parents from over 70 Calgary schools took part. At Westgate, over 200 riders (students, parents and staff) participated. We are hoping for even more this year!

To make Bike to School Day a fun-filled community adventure, parent and teacher volunteers have established four routes (including a new Coach Hill route), each with an initial meeting point and a second "stop" along the route. Volunteers have generously committed to acting as informal coordinators at these meeting points.

To find out more and to register for this free event, please visit the Westgate Bike to School Day website at biketoschool.eventbrite.ca.

Student Groupings for 2016/17

Part of our planning process for next year is to determine class placements for students.  At Westgate, teachers and administration will be working together to create class lists.  From a school perspective, our overarching and most important goal is to provide the best learning environment possible for each of our students.  Teachers take this responsibility very seriously and spend a great deal of time thinking about the best placement for each and every child.

Some of the factors that are considered when creating class lists include:  number of students, gender, achievement level, independence, behaviour, leadership skill, and learning style.  We also look at social groupings and friendships, our knowledge of individual students, teachers and the student-teacher dynamic.

We believe that we know our students very well and have a good understanding of what would work well for each of them, and that our teachers are the ones who are the best equipped to balance individual needs with what is best for the whole group.  If there is information about your child that we do not have and would help us with placement, please communicate this to your child’s teacher. This will help us to balance the classes and make the best decisions for all students.

We ask that you do not make requests for specific teachers.

Thank you for your consideration.

Parent Teacher Conferences

On Thursday, March 10th, and Friday, March 11th, 2016, we will hold our final round of Parent Teacher Conferences. The purpose of these conferences is to discuss student progress and next steps in learning. We ask parents and guardians to bring their student(s) with them to the conference so that students may share two pieces of work.

The on-line booking system is now open. A link to the Conference Manager is located under Quicklinks on the main page of our website.

We look forward to seeing you!

Penny Carnival - Save the Date!

Penny Carnival is the perfect opportunity to have a great night with your whole family, teachers, and friends! Your children will not want to miss this!

The time honoured and well-loved annual Penny Carnival is scheduled for Friday, May 13rd from 5:30 - 8:00 pm at Westgate. This year's carnival brings dozens of new twists from what you have come to expect. Featuring ALL NEW games and activities, new food vendors and a few more surprises worth coming out for!

The Penny Carnival is the school's largest FUNdraiser; you can have a blast as a family while raising money to support our programs and students at Westgate! Last year, we raised a new record of nearly $13,000! Ticket Order forms will go home in April, please plan to come out and celebrate!

Lastly, we would love your help to make this event a success. Our carnival committee is small and this is a HUGE event that requires many volunteers. If you have a prize to donate to the raffle or you love shopping, organizing, decorating, or can help in any way as we plan for the BIG NIGHT, please email me at pennycarnival@gmail.com or call (403) 249-8431 – I can’t wait to hear from you!

City Hall School

The week after Winter Break, I took my teaching and my students to a new level. You could say things got real! We moved our classroom to City Hall for the week, had a meeting in Mayor Nenshi's office, interviewed 10 separate experts in the fields of recreation, citizen engagement, event planning and marketing. We learned how to measure the success of a community and that each community member has something valuable to offer. I watched 10 and 11 year olds marvel at the experience of using a +15, riding a city bus, playing football in Olympic Plaza, walking Stephen Avenue and using a locker! All and all, it is these weeks that ignite the love for teaching. These weeks demonstrate that students can drive the learning process and that education is about experience.
